Introductory paragraphs set up your ideas for the audience. You want to introduce your ideas and lead your readers into your thesis (or argument). The thesis should be the last sentence in your introductory paragraph, and establishes what you will argue throughout your paper. What two food cultures are you connecting and why? Work to answer this question (but avoid making statements such as, “In this paper, I will argue…”). Imagine your thesis as a road map, giving your audience an overview of your ideas. Work to be specific, but do not feel as though you have to list every idea you will address (longer papers make this difficult).
